Classes and Courses: Weekly Talmud Class for Beginners

RABBI JACOB SCHREIBER zt"l TALMUD SHIUR

TALMUD FOR BEGINNERS with Professor Robert Berkowitz

Sundays 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Talmud is the connection between the Bible and the way we live our lives on a daily basis. Rather than only focussing on religious practices, it embodies a range of civil laws and a standard of ethical behaviour that define the essence of being Jewish.

Talmud study involves an interchange of ideas that are subject to rigorous analysis through a range of systematic processess. The language of Talmud, Aramaic, and the background knowledge needed to undertake study of the Talmud, serve as a barrier to many who otherwise possess the interest and intellect required to successfully undertake this study.

We are studying the tractate of Bava Metzia that deals with commercial law and underscores the moral and practical code that governs financial disputes. The Talmud will be studied in English and presented in an interactive manner that attempts to reproduce the thrust and parry of Talmudic thought.

The class is taught by Robert Berkowitz, a surgeon, and was arranged by Dean Ellinson, a lawyer and Kew Shule old boy, who both have a mutual passion for Talmud and wish to share this with their friends.
