KHC's new monthly afternoon tea and guest speaker programme commenced in July 2009 with a most interesting address by Jennifer Huppert, MP, Labor member for the Southern Metropolitan Region in the Victorian Legislative Council, the upper house of the Parliament of Victoria. The Southern Metropolitan Region comprises the Legislative Assembly districts of Albert Park, Bentleigh, Brighton, Burwood, Caulfield, Hawthorn, Kew, Malvern, Oakleigh, Prahran and Sandringham.
Ms Huppert's topic was entitled "What a Nice Jewish Girl Like Me Is Doing In Politics and What Really Goes On In The Legislative Assembly In Victoria."
Our second talk took place on Monday 17th August. Our presenter was Dr Rodney Gouttman, Research Associate in the School of Historical Studies at Monash University. His topic was "Zionism: An Embattled Landscape?"
Our third talk was held on Monday 14th September. Rabbi Stephen Boroda spoke on the topic of "Teshuvah in Our Everyday Lives." Based on the work of Rabbi J B Soloveitchik, zt”l, Rabbi Boroda addressed two approaches to Teshuvah - the intellectual approach and the emotional approach - and how these can be applied in our everyday lives.
